The Mystery of December 25

In the early Christian world, Jesus’ birth wasn’t celebrated at all. It wasn’t until the 2nd century that Christians began marking the occasion, and by the 3rd century, December 25 had emerged as a significant date. But why?

One theory links it to March 25, a date that Roman Christian historian Sextus Julius Africanus identified as both the day of Jesus’ conception and the creation of the world. Fast forward nine months, and voilà—December 25 as Jesus’ birthday.

But there’s more. This date also aligns with ancient Roman traditions like the festival of Saturnalia, a time of feasting, gift-giving, and celebration. Plus, it marked the rebirth of the Unconquered Sun (Sol Invictus) after the winter solstice—a perfect metaphor for Jesus as the “light of the world.”

The Pagan Connection

Here’s where it gets even more fascinating: December 25 was also the birthday of Mithra, a deity worshipped by Roman soldiers. Could the early Church have chosen this date to overshadow these pagan festivals? Many historians think so. It was during Emperor Constantine’s reign, around 336, that December 25 was officially celebrated as Christmas.
