Its vibrant culture, warm-hearted people, untouched nature, and pristine beaches left an indelible mark on our memories. If you’re planning a trip to Phuket and wondering about the must-see attractions, our list of places to visit in Phuket will be your perfect guide.

Must-See Attractions in Phuket

Phuket is a city renowned for its stunning beaches and islands. For our 4-day trip, we kept this in mind and dedicated two days to island tours. The remaining two days were spent exploring temples, an elephant sanctuary, and local neighborhoods.

Phuket Islands

Phuket itself is an island—a dazzling gem floating in the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea, often referred to as the “Pearl of Thailand.” But what makes Phuket truly special is its surrounding archipelago of over 30 breathtaking islands. Each one offers unique natural beauty, making them a treasure trove for nature lovers, diving enthusiasts, and adventure seekers.

Upon arriving in Phuket, you’ll find numerous speedboat tours that allow you to visit at least 4–5 islands in one day. You can book these day-long Phuket island tours online in advance to secure your spot and ensure a hassle-free experience.

Must-Visit Islands in Phuket

Phuket is home to approximately 39 islands, so if you’re visiting on a tight schedule, you’ll need to narrow down your options. If it’s your first visit, we recommend the popular—and inevitably crowded—islands. However, choosing a tour operator with well-planned schedules can make this less of an issue.

FRIENDLY TIP: Speaking of tour operators, nearly all popular island tours in Phuket are conducted via speedboats, and all companies provide lunch at the same designated spots. So don’t be too swayed by claims like “our tour is higher quality” because the standards are essentially the same. Additionally, don’t pay extra for Turkish tour operators in Patong Beach just because you’re uncertain about your English—they’re not necessarily worth the cost.

Phi Phi Islands

One of Phuket’s most iconic destinations, the Phi Phi Islands, gained worldwide fame thanks to Leonardo DiCaprio’s film The Beach. With its turquoise lagoons, powdery white sand, and towering rock formations, this place looks like a postcard. Maya Bay is the most famous spot, but nearby attractions like Viking Cave and Pileh Lagoon are equally stunning.

Due to conservation efforts, swimming is prohibited at Maya Bay, though you can wade in the shallows. However, you’ll have the chance to snorkel from the boat—don’t miss this opportunity to explore the vibrant coral reefs!

TIP: Phi Phi Island is the most expensive island in terms of accommodation and dining. Keep this in mind if you’re planning to shop or eat here.

James Bond Island

Khao Phing Kan Island, famously featured in the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun, is now widely known as James Bond Island. This area’s striking karst formations rising dramatically from the sea create an awe-inspiring landscape.

Here are the temples you shouldn’t miss when visiting Phuket:

Wat Chalong (Wat Chaiyathararam)

The most famous and largest temple in Phuket, Wat Chalong is one of the island’s spiritual centers. Built in the 19th century, this temple was constructed to honor two significant monks, Luang Poh Chaem and Luang Poh Chuang, who played a crucial role in restoring peace during the 1876 rebellion of Chinese tin miners.

The main building (viharn) houses Buddha statues and stunning murals, while the Phra Mahathat Chedi is believed to contain a sacred Buddha relic.

Big Buddha

Located on Nakkerd Hill in southern Phuket, the Big Buddha is a colossal statue overlooking the island. Standing 45 meters tall, this white marble figure serves as both a place of worship and a major tourist attraction.

Symbolizing the peaceful energy and spiritual atmosphere of Phuket, the Big Buddha also features a museum beneath it that details Buddha’s life. Panels showcasing quotes about Buddhism from figures like Carl Jung, Bertrand Russell, Tina Turner, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Steve Jobs add a modern cultural dimension.

At the Big Buddha site, visitors can meditate, make offerings, and even receive blessings from monks.

Wat Khao Rang

Situated on Khao Rang Hill, this temple is home to Phuket’s first golden sitting Buddha statue. This large and impressive statue offers a stunning view of the northern parts of the island.

Surrounding the statue are fascinating mythological figures and sculptures representing Thai culture. Thanks to its remote location, Wat Khao Rang remains a peaceful sanctuary, making it less crowded than other temples.

Wat Phra Thong (Temple of the Golden Buddha)

One of the most mystical temples in Phuket, Wat Phra Thong is known for its half-buried golden Buddha statue. According to legend, attempts to fully unearth the statue led to misfortunes for those involved.

This air of mystery makes Wat Phra Thong a unique and intriguing stop on your cultural journey through Phuket.

Wat Srisoonthorn

Located in northern Phuket, Wat Srisoonthorn is famous for its massive reclining Buddha statue. Measuring 29 meters in length, the statue symbolizes peace and tranquility.

The temple courtyard is adorned with statues of mythological creatures and figures from Thai culture. As a vital place of worship for locals, it is often bustling with activity.

When thinking about places to visit in Phuket, island tours might come to mind first. However, once you return to the city after a day of exploration, don’t miss out on the vibrant neighborhoods where you can shop, relax at cafés and restaurants, enjoy a massage, dance to live music, or snap some Instagram-worthy photos.

Here are the must-visit neighborhoods in Phuket where you might find yourself stopping for endless photo opportunities:

Old Town (Phuket Old City Center)

Old Town is the historical and cultural heart of Phuket. This neighborhood is famous for its colorful Sino-Portuguese buildings, constructed during the tin mining boom of the 19th century. Its narrow streets are lined with charming cafés, art galleries, and boutique shops, perfect for capturing stunning photographs.

While in Old Town, don’t miss the main street Thalang Road, Phuket Trickeye Museum, Thai Hua Museum, and the Sunday Walking Street Market, held on weekends.

This area is ideal for daytime exploration and comes alive at night. Since our hotel was near Old Town, we had all our dinners here. You’ll find a variety of international cuisines to savor.

Patong

Patong is the nightlife and entertainment hub of Phuket, making it a favorite for those seeking an energetic vacation. While it didn’t appeal to us much, we did visit the beach in the morning. However, if you’re looking for non-stop music and fun until dawn, Patong is the place to be.

The heart of Patong, Bangla Road, is packed with bars, nightclubs, and street performers that light up the night. During the day, you can try water sports at the beach or indulge in a beachside massage. For shopping, check out Jungceylon Shopping Mall.

Kata and Karon

Kata and Karon offer a quieter alternative to Patong, ideal for a relaxing vacation. These two neighborhoods boast clean beaches and a more laid-back atmosphere, making them worth a visit.

The iconic Big Buddha statue, one of Phuket’s most famous landmarks, is located near these neighborhoods. You can visit the temple in the morning and transition easily to beach activities later in the day.

Kamala

Like Surin, Kamala is one of Phuket’s quieter and more luxurious neighborhoods. If you’re looking for a peaceful, upscale getaway, Kamala is a great choice for accommodation.

Rawai

Rawai is perfect for experiencing local life and exploring the more natural side of the island.

At Rawai Fishing Village, you can purchase fresh seafood or have it cooked at local restaurants. Like much of Phuket, Rawai also offers opportunities for diving and boat tours.

One of the best sunset views in Phuket can be enjoyed at Promthep Cape, located in Rawai. Now you know, so plan accordingly!

Surin

Known for its luxurious resorts and fine-dining restaurants, Surin offers a sophisticated holiday experience. If you’re after an upscale and elite getaway, make sure to consider this neighborhood in your Phuket itinerary.
