Lunar nodes are points where the Moon intersects the ecliptic plane (the plane of Earth’s orbit around the Sun). The ecliptic is the orbital plane of Earth around the Sun. The Moon crosses this plane at two points: one in the north and one in the south. These are not physical objects but points calculated mathematically.

These two points are known as the Lunar North Node and the Lunar South Node.

The North Node and South Node are positioned 180° apart, meaning they are in opposition. For example, if the North Node is at 10° Capricorn, the South Node will be directly opposite at 10° Cancer.

Are the Lunar Nodes Ever Direct?

They always move in a retrograde motion. For instance, if the NLN is in Taurus, its next transition will be into Aries, not Gemini.

How Often Do Lunar Nodes Shift?

They complete a full cycle approximately every 18-19 years. Thus, if the SLN is currently in Scorpio, its next transit in Scorpio will occur in about 18-19 years.

How Long Does It Take For The Nodes To Change Signs?

They change signs roughly every 1.5 years.

What Do The Lunar Nodes Represent In Astrology?

Lunar nodes serve as indicators that help us understand the relationship between our past and future. Jan Spiller, author of “Astrology for the Soul,” describes the nodes as offering “information that guides individuals towards achieving success, confidence, and balance in their personality.”

The South Node represents our past experiences, accumulated knowledge, comfort zones, and possessions. In contrast, the North Node indicates the behaviors and patterns we need to develop and transform to improve our lives and overcome recurring challenges.

For example, a person with South Node in Libra may have a tendency to prioritize harmony in relationships, often at the expense of their own desires. This individual excels at finding common ground but may struggle to assert their identity. Since their North Node is in the opposite sign of Aries, their chart suggests they should embrace Aries’ traits and learn to assert themselves. By doing so, they step out of their comfort zone and make significant strides in personal growth. An North Node in Aries indicates a journey towards experiencing self-centeredness in this lifetime.
