Before diving into Halloween décor ideas, I’d like to briefly touch on what Halloween is, why it’s celebrated, and why symbols like pumpkins, ghosts, bats, crows, witches, broomsticks, and spiders are often used as decorations during this festive event.

What is Halloween? When is it Celebrated?

Halloween is believed to be the night when witches, ghosts, and ghouls emerge, according to an old belief. It is celebrated on October 31st.

Why is Halloween Celebrated?

Today, Halloween is celebrated by Christians, but its roots trace back to the Pagan Celtic Samhain Festival. The word “Samhain” is derived from the Old Irish words sam (summer) and fuin (end). It marks the end of summer and the harvest season, celebrated on the night of October 31st leading into November 1st.

In the 1st century, the Romans conquered Celtic lands and moved All Saints’ Day, originally celebrated on May 13th, to November 1st. As the eve of All Saints’ Day, October 31st became a sacred night, and thus, the name “Halloween” comes from “Holy Evening.”

How is Halloween Celebrated?

To scare away and ward off evil spirits, pumpkins are carved with scary faces. People apply makeup to look like witches or ghouls and dress up in costumes. On this day, children go door to door collecting candy and money.

In recent years, Halloween celebrations have also been enjoyed for fun in our country, and there are many unique decoration ideas for October 31st. The first thing that comes to mind, of course, are those made using pumpkins. But I’ll try to start with the classic Halloween symbols and move toward the most interesting ones. Maybe this year on October 31st, you’ll get the chance to try some of these in your own home 🙂

Halloween Symbols

Pumpkins

But make them the scariest ones… Carve pumpkins and draw terrifying faces on them, then place candles or lights inside. You can hang them on your door, garden, balcony, or inside your home. This is the most classic Halloween decoration! 🙂

Witches and Their Brooms

If there’s anything more famous than a witch’s hat, it’s their flying brooms. So, gather some twigs and branches, make a broom, and use it as a decorative piece for Halloween by hanging it on your walls.

Skulls

Instead of placing a full skeleton in the middle of your living room, you can opt to use just a skull as a Halloween decoration.

Crows

Due to their black color and eerie cawing, crows are often associated with bad omens. Don’t forget to include them in your decorations on this fun—oops, I mean scary—day! 🙂

I couldn’t leave black cats, notorious for bringing bad luck, off this list of Halloween decorations. They also have their place among the symbols you can use to scare off evil spirits on Halloween.

However, we still love cats, and of course, all animals. Even with Halloween as an excuse, we can choose their cute and adorable versions instead of the scary ones. Here’s one for you! If you wish, you can place an order and display the artwork in the most beautiful corner of your home.
