Table of Contents
Last year, we had the chance to go on a two-week trip to Thailand and Indonesia. Our travel route started with Bangkok, followed by Phuket, and finally Bali. Now, we’re going to share everything we did during our time in Bali, along with a list of activities for those who have more time to explore, including unique experiences you may not have heard of before.
But first, let’s share the links to our guides on how to get to Bali and how to get from Phuket to Bali for those planning a multi-destination trip like us.
Most activities in Bali, Indonesia’s enchanting and untouched island, revolve around nature sports, must-see attractions, and experience-based activities that reflect local beliefs and culture. We’ve put together a list of 17 unforgettable things to do in Bali, ensuring you have a unique and memorable adventure.
Best 17 Activities in Bali
Whether you’re visiting Bali for your honeymoon or exploring solo, these activities will help you fully experience what the island has to offer.
Here are at least 17 must-try activities in Bali:
1. Start Your Day with Puppy Yoga
Bali is home to many yoga schools, offering the perfect setting for yoga and meditation surrounded by nature. While practicing yoga here is already a must-try experience, we suggest taking it a step further by joining a puppy yoga session!
Puppy yoga is popular in countries like Canada, the UK, and the US, but since you’re already in Bali, why not take this opportunity to try yoga with adorable puppies? It’s a heartwarming and unique experience that combines relaxation, mindfulness, and pure joy!
By the way, if you decide to try this, make sure to book in advance. It’s incredibly popular, so finding a spot can be quite challenging. Unfortunately, we couldn’t participate because of this, and it has remained on our minds ever since. We wouldn’t want the same to happen to you!
2. Watch the Kecak and Fire Dance in Uluwatu
No trip to Bali is complete without witnessing the Kecak and Fire Dance at Uluwatu Temple! Performed on a cliffside stage overlooking the ocean, this dance show during sunset offers a cultural and mystical experience. The male dancers’ hypnotic “cak-cak” chants recreate scenes from the Ramayana epic, drawing you into a mesmerizing ritual. The grand finale, where flames rise and dancers play with fire, is absolutely breathtaking!
You can reserve your spot now to ensure you don’t miss out on this captivating performance.
3. Go Surfing
The moment we landed at Bali’s airport, one thing stood out immediately—tourists carrying surfboards. We had heard that Bali was a surfing paradise, but we didn’t expect to see this many surfers! Thanks to its consistent waves and affordability, Bali has become a favorite surf spot, especially among Australian surfers.
If you’ve never surfed before, don’t worry! The beginner-friendly waves at Kuta, Canggu, and Seminyak beaches make it easy to learn. With just a few hours of lessons, you’ll be standing on your board in no time—just like we did! 🙂 After taking a surf lesson in Şile, Istanbul, surfing in Bali felt like an entirely different experience!
For experienced surfers, spots like Uluwatu and Padang Padang offer massive waves and an ultimate adrenaline rush. And of course, the best part of the experience? Relaxing on the beach with a fresh coconut in hand after riding the waves!
There are local surf instructors on the beach who can give you a quick lesson and get you in the water. For around~$10-20, you can enjoy a 1-hour surf experience in Bali.
If you’d prefer a more professional surf school, here are some options to check out:
4. Try Luwak Coffee Tasting
If you’re a coffee enthusiast, you absolutely must try the world’s most expensive coffee, Luwak coffee, before leaving Bali. Also known as Kopi Luwak, this coffee is made from coffee cherries eaten and digested by civet cats, resulting in uniquely processed beans. While it may sound unusual at first, the flavor profile is truly one-of-a-kind—think of it as an intense, rich filter coffee.
The best part? Coffee tasting experiences in Bali don’t just include Luwak coffee; you’ll also get to sample around 20 different types of teas and coffees. It’s a great opportunity to buy some unique local teas as souvenirs for your loved ones.
To experience the entire process firsthand, visit coffee plantations in Ubud or Kintamani, where you can learn about traditional coffee-making techniques and enjoy some of Bali’s most aromatic brews.
5. Walk Through the Tegalalang Rice Terraces
One of the most iconic landscapes in Bali, Tegalalang Rice Terraces offers breathtaking views with its lush green stepped fields. But to truly appreciate the beauty, timing is everything! The best time to visit Bali’s rice fields is right after the rainy season and just before harvest time, typically from April to June and September to November.
If you’re a morning person, arriving early is highly recommended. Not only will you get cooler temperatures and softer lighting, but you’ll also avoid the crowds. Along the way, you can chat with local farmers, learn about their traditional rice-growing techniques, and immerse yourself in Bali’s rural culture.
And of course, if you love photography, this place is an Instagram dream!
6. Soar on the Giant Swings
Swinging in Bali is not just a simple activity—it’s a thrilling, adrenaline-pumping experience that makes you feel completely free! In Ubud’s famous Bali Swings, you’ll find yourself on a massive swing, surrounded by lush jungles and breathtaking landscapes. As you swing back and forth, looking down at the endless green valleys below, the feeling is absolutely indescribable.
Not only is it an unforgettable adventure, but it’s also an amazing photo opportunity! Ever wondered how those flowy, colorful dresses in Bali swing photos look so perfect? Well, here’s a secret: you can rent them on-site for a small fee! So no need to overpack—just rent a dress and let it fly in the wind. 🙂
And of course, waiting in line is Bali’s biggest nightmare—so to avoid long queues, book your ticket in advance!
7. Take Photos with Monkeys
How about taking a walk through a forest filled with monkeys? Sounds fun, right? Well, let us warn you—monkeys are not as cute as they seem! The Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud is famous for its mystical temples and playful (but mischievous) macaques.
Warning: If you’re carrying food or shiny objects, you might become an easy target for these little troublemakers! Taking photos with them is fun, but we strongly recommend keeping your bag and valuables secured.
8. Cool Off at Tegenungan Waterfall
One of the best places to escape Bali’s heat is Tegenungan Waterfall! It’s one of the most accessible waterfalls on the island, making it a must-visit spot.
If you go early in the morning, you’ll avoid the crowds and get to enjoy the peaceful, magical atmosphere. Feeling adventurous? Jump into the water for an extra thrill!
For hassle-free transportation, you can also join a guided tour.
9. Join a Shamanic Healing Session
Bali isn’t just famous for its beaches and nature—it’s also known for its spiritual energy. Although Indonesia is a Muslim-majority country, Bali is completely different, with Hinduism and Buddhism deeply embedded in daily life. Shamanic traditions also play an important role in the island’s spiritual culture.
If you’re looking for a deep, soul-cleansing experience, consider joining a shamanic healing session in Ubud. These sessions, led by traditional Balinese healers, include meditation, energy cleansing, and breathwork techniques to purify both the mind and body.
💡 Tip: Book your session in advance to secure a spot!
10. Get Muddy on an ATV Tour
Riding an ATV through Bali’s lush forests and rice fields is one of the most exciting activities you can do on the island. These tours usually take you through rural village paths, muddy trails, and even water crossings.
If you think, “I can ride an ATV anywhere,” think again! Doing it in Bali’s breathtaking nature is a completely unique experience.
11. Watch the Sunrise from Mount Batur
One of the most unforgettable experiences in Bali is hiking up Mount Batur, an active volcano, before sunrise. The trek is a bit challenging, but once you reach the top, the breathtaking sunrise views make it all worth it.
💡 Bonus tip: Bring a thermos of hot coffee and enjoy a peaceful meditation session with the stunning view. If you have enough time, joining a guided tour is a great way to experience this adventure stress-free.
12. Explore Nusa Penida Island
Many travelers skip Nusa Penida Island when visiting Bali—but recently, its popularity has skyrocketed, making it a must-visit destination! Just a short boat ride from Bali, this island is a paradise of dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters, and hidden beaches.
Here’s what you can’t miss in Nusa Penida:
- Kelingking Beach – The famous T-Rex-shaped cliff that looks straight out of a postcard.
- Crystal Bay – A perfect spot for snorkeling and discovering tropical fish.
- Manta Point – Swim with majestic manta rays for a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience!
13. Watch the Sunset at Tanah Lot Temple
Sitting on a rock formation in the middle of the ocean, Tanah Lot Temple is one of Bali’s most mystical landmarks. Visiting at sunset is a must, as the orange skies blend beautifully with the temple’s silhouette, creating a breathtaking view.
14. Party at Beach Clubs
Some of Bali’s trendiest spots are its beach clubs, especially in Seminyak and Canggu. These venues are perfect for unwinding after a long day, sipping on a tropical cocktail, and enjoying sunset DJ performances by the pool.
💃 Must-visit beach clubs:
🏖 Potato Head Beach Club (Seminyak)
🏖 Finns Beach Club (Canggu)
🏖 La Brisa (Canggu)
💡 Tip: If you want to attend exclusive DJ events, make sure to reserve your spot in advance!
15. Take a Local Workshop
Bali offers a variety of workshops that let you learn traditional arts and crafts. Some of the most popular options include:
- Silver & gold jewelry-making workshops – Create your own handmade jewelry.
- Balinese cooking classes – Learn how to cook authentic Nasi Goreng, Satay, and Balinese Curry.
If you love hands-on experiences, this is a fun and unique way to dive deeper into Bali’s rich culture!
16. Cleanse Your Soul at Tirta Empul
One of Bali’s must-visit temples, Tirta Empul, offers more than just beautiful architecture—it’s a place of spiritual cleansing. But don’t just go for sightseeing—fully experience the purification ritual!
As soon as you step into this sacred water temple, you’ll feel the calm and serene energy of Hindu spirituality. The temple’s natural spring-fed pools are where locals and visitors alike bathe under holy water fountains, washing away negative energy and setting intentions.
💡 Things to remember before visiting Tirta Empul:
- Sarong (traditional Balinese wrap) is mandatory – You can borrow one for free at the entrance.
- Be respectful – This is a religious site, so avoid loud behavior.
- Follow the purification steps properly – Locals can guide you on how to do the ritual correctly.
If you want to experience a deeper spiritual connection, don’t miss this opportunity!
17. End Your Trip with a Relaxing Balinese Massage
After all the adventures, hikes, and exploration, it’s time to treat yourself to a traditional Balinese massage! Not only is it deeply relaxing, but it also helps relieve muscle tension—especially if you’ve already experienced a painful Thai massage before! 😅
💡 Tip: Research and book your spa appointment in advance for the best experience.
Additionally, you can also join an elephant feeding experience in Bali, just like the one we did in Phuket.
